Taking a design turn
We have seen that in contrast to a systematic approach, there are no templates in the systemic approach. (Ison, 2010) introduces two orders in the learning system. The first order is characterised by a knowledge transfer, while the second order is about creating the environment to allow the student or practitioner to learn by itself.
The transition from the first order mentality to the second order is what it is called ‘a design turn’.
In my journey I have experienced the ‘design turn’ while writing module assignments with the Juggle Methaphor framework , due to the relational dynamic of juggling the balls, my line of thinking was not linear, but instead every time a new concept “matures” in me, it opens several ramifications or different ways to pursue other concepts.
My classical approach to problem-solving was systematic: in which once a sub-problem is solved I moved to the next and forgot about all solved sub-problems.
Now I come to realise that not all problems can be solved dealing with several parts, but instead, I should consider the whole systems, its relationships and also myself as an element of the system.
